TEKEZE WATERSHED, ETHIOPIA

base_map

The Tekeze River is 608 kilometers long, eventually flowing into the Nile River, the major life line of Africa.  The Tekeze River basin has elevations ranging from 727 meters to 4517 meters. The vast range in elevation accounts for high peaks and plateaus, as well as, deep canyon gorges. The topological characteristics in this watershed along with soil types, landuse, and rainfall lead to high erosion rates. High erosion rates may be detrimental to such an important water source, through sediment deposition resulting in poor water quailtiy and turbidity.
