WATERSHEDS
AND WETLANDS: AN ARCVIEW PROJECT (2000)
Level: 6th Grade
Purpose: The
objective of this project is to teach students about watersheds and wetlands.
The students will learn about the benefits of wetlands for flood protection,
water quality improvement, and wildlife habitat. The students will
use data from the City of Fort Collins to view wetlands within the city
and determine where they exist and why.
BUTTERFLIES
OF THE WORLD (1999)
Level: Grade 2
Purpose: To
help students learn geographic concepts such as direction and distance,
and to learn to identify specific places on a map. The lessons also introduce
students to the utility of a geographic information system by providing
links to visual and written information on specific countries and regions.
This project will introduce students to a variety of butterfly species
by pictures and scientific names and allow them to recognize the difference
between natural and human-induced migration of butterflies.
COLORADO
GEOGRAPHY (1997 - web-based only)
Level: Grade 2
Purpose: Provide
students with an understanding of the: 1) geographic location of the state
of Colorado relative to the nation and the world, 2) location of Colorado's
major cities relative to its major rivers, and 3) Colorado's geologic barriers
to human settlement.
EARTHQUAKES
IN FORT COLLINS!? (1998)
Level: Grade
2
Purpose: The
purpose of this project is to introduce students to earthquakes. Through
a series of maps within ArcView and the accompanying text provided on this
page, students will be able to interactively learn about earthquakes. The
project is designed to help students understand where and why earthquakes
occur and why they do not occur in Fort Collins to any significant degree.
It does so by answering the question: Are there earthquakes in Fort
Collins?

study world population growth using GIS concepts.

Purpose: This lesson
was created to address particular educational standards involving why volcanoes
exist, where they are located, how they are formed, what they do, and how
they affect man. The lesson content concentrates on the western United
States.

OF POTENTIAL LOCATIONS FOR THE CAPITAL OF MEXICO (1998)
Level: Grade

Purpose: Is
Mexico City the best choice for the seat of Mexican government? What
cities or locations might be better? What information do you need
to be able to make this decision? Can a GIS help you answer some
of these questions? If you use a GIS to try to answer these questions,
can you think of other ways a GIS might be successfully employed?
Does an interactive GIS software product enhance the ability of young children
to critically examine their environment and their world?
MATHEMATICS!
USING ARCVIEW GIS (1999)
Level: Grade
6-7
Purpose: Students
will learn mathematical concepts through the use of the ArcView Geographic
Information System (GIS) software. Students will focus on the mathematical
concepts presented and use the GIS to address those concepts. During the
lessons students will use data containing information about the State of
Colorado to solve mathematical problems.
JAPAN
AND THE RING OF FIRE (1999)
Level: Grade
K-12
Purpose: The
students will use ArcView to address a series of questions relating to
the the geography of Japan. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding
how the economic, social, and political systems of Japan are influenced
by its physical environment.
